Infographic of the Day: History and Origins of Science Fiction

There is only one word to describe this graphic: Wow! Here Ward Shelly maps out the history and origin of science fiction in such detail. Just zoom in on the full-size graphic to fully appreciate the effort that has gone into creating this masterpiece. Unlike most data visualisation and infographic artists, Ward swaps the computer for a paintbrush and painstakingly draws out each of his huge graphics by hand. 

Each oil painting takes months to create, starting with the collection of the data, which is then organized and tentatively layed out on the page in pencil to accommodate the constant revisions. When a somewhat stable layout is reach, Shelly transfers the work to mylar, which enables him to use other photographic techniques, inching towards a permanent version in oils (Text from Brain Pickings)
